The basics
What is a neuropsychological assessment?
A neuropsychological assessment combines a clinical interview with standardised tests of memory, attention, processing speed, language, visual and spatial skills and executive function. Questionnaires about mood and everyday functioning are included. Results are compared with people of a similar age and background, and interpreted in light of your history and the question being asked. You receive a feedback discussion and a written report with practical recommendations. Clinical neuropsychologists are registered psychologists with at least six years of university training and an area of practice endorsement from the Psychology Board of Australia. Referral, fees and funding
Referral
No referral is needed for a privately funded assessment. A referral from your GP or specialist is welcome, and funded pathways have their own referral or approval steps.
Fees
Comprehensive assessments are quoted individually, with a written estimate before booking. Where a specialist or GP refers with a specific question about memory or thinking, a targeted neuropsychological consultation and letter starts from $800. See our fees and policies.
Medicare and other funding
There is no Medicare rebate for neuropsychological assessment in adults. The only Medicare items for this kind of assessment apply to people under 25, referred by a paediatrician or psychiatrist. Assessment may be funded through the NDIS, DVA or WorkCover Queensland and insurers, where eligible and approved.

Do I need a referral to see a neuropsychologist?
No. You, or a family member on your behalf, can contact us directly for a privately funded assessment. A referral from your GP or specialist is welcome. NDIS, DVA, WorkCover and insurer funding each have their own referral or approval steps.
How long does a neuropsychological assessment take?
The interview takes about an hour. Testing is a morning or an afternoon, commonly three to four hours with breaks, and can be split across two visits. The feedback appointment follows once the results are scored and the report is written.
How much does a neuropsychological assessment cost?

What is the difference between a neuropsychologist and a psychologist?
A clinical neuropsychologist is a registered psychologist with additional specialist training in how conditions affecting the brain change thinking, emotion and behaviour. A clinical psychologist is trained in the assessment and treatment of mental health conditions. Our clinic provides both.
